It sure does. If you follow it enough, it seems to be part of a series of barriers...

[Well, it seems like it's been thoroughly attached to the torii gate, but is also preventing smashing of said torii gate. You're not going to get past this barrier without some kind of spellkey that'll shake open a weakness that can be exploited]

...It covers the shrine completely, even below. I could try using force to break it, but I don't know if it's a good idea. It's still a part of his heart.

[pokes the gate a few times]

[pulls out the paper Librarian gave her and . . . holds it up to the barrier???]

Ah...

The paper reacts! The writing on it lifting off the paper and swirling around the gate for a moment and then disappearing up toward the sky.

...

After a moment the whole world seems to shiver and rumble...

And when that settles a panel pops open on the torii with a ding. A pleasant female voice, like the ones that announce doors closing on trains asks, "What binds friendship together?" The panel offers a little digital scanner.

Those still paying attention to the barrier notice that there is now a clear weakness in it that will drop the barrier when the correct information is imputed.

[ .................LOOKS AT TOKI]

"--Eh? Me??"

You're from here you should know the answer!!!

"I'm not from here, I'm from over there!" he points past the gate, "I've never seen the gates do something like this!"

He sighs. "Um, I can give it a try though..." Toki sticks his hand on the scanner!! .... it does nothing.

...oh I thought you like would speak into that...

It's a scanner –– technology.

I don't remember something like this yet . . . Some kind of computer input?

[puts her hand on it???]

Technology is weird.

It still does nothing...

"Ahahaha... I... guess that wasn't it. Uh.. I guess it needs some item?" Toki leans closer to inspect the panel. As the chord tied around his neck lines up in front of the scanner it lights up, the cord disappearing into a string of data. The panel beeps again and the barrier drops.

Ah... it's down.

"Eh--Shinonome's hairtie!" Toki makes a sad face, reaching to touch his neck :(

Way to go Toki!

"It was on accident..." He laughs sheepishly.

Still counts.

"Well, I guess Edo's open now. Um, I know there are other places, but I don't usually leave mine. I can take you guys to Shinonome if you want? He probably knows more than me about what's going on..."

Lets go then.
