Under that is a bit of insecurity but it tends to fade in and out.

That time she came up to his room after he threw a fit, that time she did a 'come hither' with Watanuki's glasses, that time she was a sad lump, that time he pranked her when she couldn't hear, many instances of yanking her hair--again deep affection, kind of brotherly feelings; a little bit of pride, a little bit of worry (still thinks she's cute)

As you're about to head back in you hear the sound of many feet

It's a couple ants! Ace comes jogging up behind them as they stop in front of Yayoi and Red, poking at them curiously. The bigger one clicks something that you realize you understand as 'Different? Urgent?'

[holy crap what]

'Change?' The smaller one pokes and prods a little roughly before it seems satisfied (Ace has shown you this ant before).

[pats the ant]

This is out help, Ace?

You'll get swallowed if you try to go into the dark by yourselves. These guys carry lanterns that'll make sure that doesn't happen.

Oh okay.

[punches in the arm]

Ow! What?

Well, Ace is talking back to them in broken ant!Language, if that helps explain that, though sometimes he just gives up.

"It's probably better they don't wander around in the dark by themselves, anyway, and you guys are faster."

Ah . . . They're going to take us somewhere?

Yeah, they can get you guys directly to the gate. You have to go through the dark to do it, so unless you wanna get lost... It's been a bit worse lately so it's better to be sure.
